When someone speaks of a slipped disc, it is one of the small discs that separate the spinal vertebrae. These small discs have a hard outer shell that is filled with a soft gel-like substance. They cushion the impact of the spinal vertebrae against each other as the individual walks, runs or dances. The vertebrae are small and hollow. They protect the spinal cord that runs through them. All the nerves that activate the body emerge from that spinal cord.
